Saturated with hundreds of both national and international competitors, it is pretty safe to say that the hair product market is a highly competitive one. We were presented with the exciting opportunity of helping Italian brand, Artègo, make its mark in the Canadian salon industry.

The challenge was to take a brand that was built for an Italian audience and market it to a Canadian one. Also, in an industry with so many competitors, we had to convince consumers as to why Artègo and its products were worth switching to.

After analyzing Artègo’s competitors, we noticed that the salon industry is saturated with brands who position themselves as a “high fashion” product. We knew we didn’t want Artègo to get lost in the crowd, so we created the “Diamond in the Rough” campaign. The idea behind it was this: Every stylist has the potential and talents to be a superstar in their own right. They just need to be discovered. Artègo will help you on that path towards owning your talent.

In order to strongly position Artègo in the minds of Canadian hair industry experts, we created a unique Artègo experience at one of the biggest traveling hair shows in North America. Using unconventional marketing tactics including everything from a green screen to props, we were able to create an unforgettable booth experience in conjunction with a social media campaign (which would later engage visitors online). As we continued to integrate Artègo’s Canadian brand and identity momentum into various other online pieces and campaigns, Artègo has been steadily gaining consumer mind share.

As a result of Artègo’s face-to-face contact with users at the tradeshows, coupled with the engagement with their fans online, Artègo’s social media following went up from 25 to just under 500 in a span of 3 months. They are also the exclusively most used hair colour product at salon schools across Canada.

Early in the product development stages, Blue Steel Chemicals discovered that their formula for Cleans-It-All not only acted as a super cleaning agent for all stains and surfaces, but it was also environmentally friendly in its make up.

With so many other “liquid-magic-in-a-bottles” out there, and when the market was just at the beginning of the Green Movement, Blue Steel Chemicals approached us to help them with the product, packaging, price and promotions that would help sell their newly developed miracle cleaner to Canadian retailers.

Uncertain of whether the Green Movement was a short trend or a movement that would develop into a culture, we knew that before we created any form of messaging for the Cleans-It-All brand and product, we had to do our due diligent research regarding consumer ha¬bits, values, preferences for color, fragrance, price sensitivity, as well as other market factors that would effect the launch of the new product.

After conducting several surveys and focus group interviews, we developed a full advertising and promotional plan, as well as designed a custom bottle shape, label, POP display, and retail signage. We also equipped Blue Steel Chemicals with a formal research and perfdefaultce presentation for the Cleans-It-All launch, so that they could effectively introduce and sell the product to potential retailers around the country.

By amply preparing the Blue Steel Chemicals team with a clear marketing plan based on research, as well as the associated designed deliverables required to launch the product in stores, the Cleans-It-All line was invited to Canadian Tire and Save-On-Food stores for retail sale.
Smart Communications
With a brand that was location specific in its name, Edmonton Cellular knew that they needed a sister brand in order to sell in other provinces. Furthermore, with the telecommunications market heating up with more and more competitors, Edmonton Cellular’s expansion also needed to figure out how to compete in new markets, with new competitors, whilst staying within the Telus franchise guidelines.

In order to compete in new markets, you have to know what you’re up against. All of Edmonton Cellular’s competitors (including Telus stores themselves), were solely focused on selling the “best” handset and plan. There was no additional value added, nor was there a reason for the customer to seek value in choosing one telecommunications store over the other.

Media-Masters created an entire brand overhaul – Edmonton Cellular shed its old skin and became SMART Communications. With a new logo, website, and several other promotional and in-store pieces, the SMART Communications brand rolled out to 8 new stores across Alberta and BC. More importantly, we developed a full product and services marketing plan to help SMART give their new and existing mobile customers more value than the competition. From customer appreciation/business networking events, to Blackberry courses, SMART Communications offered customers more than minutes and a SIM card.

With its unique services offerings and newly expanded brand, SMART Communications became one of the strongest independent telecommunication providers in western Canada. The competition’s customers, as well as the flagship Telus customers, were purchasing and engaging with SMART because of the added value that this independent company gave them. By the end of the campaign, SMART’s success gave them the flexibility to sustain 21 locations.

As a luxury destination, people live their dream vacations in St. Vincent & The Grenadines. From relaxing on the idyllic beaches to the eco-adventures in the rainforest, this Caribbean destination has more than enough to offer visitors.

With the many players and competitors in the sun destination market, the “Vincy” Ministry of Tourism and Culture hadn’t been able to justify to potential tourists the monetary costs versus benefits of visiting the islands. What could one get in St. Vincent and The Grenadines that no other vacation spot could offer?

We didn’t want to simply re-equip the Ministry of Tourism and Culture with “better” marketing materials or prettier photos than the next vacation hot spot. We knew that in order to effectively position and sell St. Vincent and The Grenadines, we had to demonstrate the Vincy experience, not merely the destination, to an audience in a specific income bracket.

As true as it is that a picture is worth a thousand words – a video is priceless, especially when it comes to communicating an experience. We therefore created a promotional video geared towards luxury vacation shoppers. We wrote the film script, hired the crew, and planned the logistics of a 14-day film shoot in the Caribbean.

By giving a specific audience a feel for what it would be like to play on one of the 32 picturesque islands in the Caribbean, we were able to help clearly communicate the value of the Vincy experience. Within the next year, St. Vincent and The Grenadines increased its number of visiting tourists and was recognized by The Travel Channel and the Caribbean Travel World Awards as Best Honeymoon Island of the Year and a place with The World’s Sexiest Beaches.

Midwest Property Management is the largest privately held residential rental property holder in Alberta and the Northwest Territories. With its vast portfolio, Midwest has grown to be one of the strongest competitors in the western Canadian rental market.

When we first met Midwest, they were having struggling to communicate a brand personality that would differentiate themselves from their competitors. Their existing cross promotional pieces for the company also lacked direction, and once again, were not consistent with their brand (or, at least, the Midwest name).

Our team did their due diligence in researching what the property management industry looked like. Lots of competitors, but none with distinct differentiation that would make us want to choose one over the other. In order to help Midwest push to the forefront of their industry, we had to develop an identity that would fuel various campaigns demonstrating why being picky about who you rent with can make a difference in your home rental experience, not just the home itself.

From the ground up, our team developed a brand and marketing strategy that translated into many focused, image-driven deliverables including a website launch, various print pieces, and of course, an eventual integrated social media campaign that would make Mr. Zuckerberg proud.
As we continue to work with Midwest in creative campaigns, online initiatives and consumer engagement, we continue to push beyond preconceived industry limits causing people to ask, “A rental company can do THAT?” Yeah, they can.
Midwest Property Management
In order for Midwest to increase its web presence and turn site visitors into leads, we needed to give them a site that was appealing, easy to navigate, and enticing enough to visit more than once (even after they signed on as a resident with Midwest). After designing and programming the website, rentmidwest.com is now user-friendly, supported by a CMS and used to promote special offers, contests and living tips.
Once we established an interactive website to drive online traffic to, we created a social media platform program for Midwest to get to the next step: online engagement! Not only did we design custom Facebook and Twitter pages, but we also created several different campaigns and contests that increased their Facebook following 30 times in less than 10 months, and pushed their Twitter following from 0 Followers to 5100 Followers in the same amount of time.
The more touch points you give the consumer about your brand, the more likely they will consider you and buy in. We therefore created a series of materials to help educate potential residents about what Midwest had to offer, tooling up Midwest’s frontline with brand supported items.

With the PCN being a new, heavily detailed initiative, Camrose needed a way to clearly communicate its purpose whilst gaining the support of over 35 local physicians, 93,000 residents, specialists and other healthcare professionals.

Since the Camrose PCN was directly involved with several other groups of stakeholders, ruling bodies and the like, it was important for our team and campaign methods to meet the needs and regulatory standards of all these groups.

After consulting with the Board of Directors for the initiative and the Alberta PCN, we produced a plan to estate a local primary care network in Camrose. Our primary aim was to educate all targeted audiences about the benefits of the new system, communicating the message in such a way that their initial resistance to change would be quickly turned.

Knowing who you’re communicating with is key to developing campaign messages that deliver results. Through a formal, informational campaign and several special events, we worked to get the united support of all Camrose physicians. In communicating with residents, we created a plan that had a more comfortable, conversational tone for informing the residents about the new and beneficial changes to the healthcare system. We knew that communicating to different audiences meant communicating different messages.
